Your Round comic: Tequila

Friday, February 29th, 2008

I’ve just realised over the past few weeks that there a stack of secret fans of my work, people who dig what I do but have never commented on the website or dropped me a mail. The Shiznit so far has totalled around 70,000 copies in circulation so I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised that a percentage of readers are intrigued by the rest of my nonsense.

So it struck me that alot of you missed out on Tequila. I have a 6 page story in it called Say a Prayer for me which I wrote around this time last year while depressed silly because my life was completely fucked. It’s a real story and it packs a punch, one of the first serious auto-bio stories that I’ve drawn.

Dec who published it hasnt put it through Diamond Comic Distributors yet and a handful appear now and then in the shops over here. You can order copies directly from him for a nominal fee. DshalveyATgmailDOTcom or through here

I’ve posted the first two pages here, little text heavy and not really representational of the story (I reveal myself as a vampire at the end. No. This is a GOOD comic). View them on the Flickr page if you want to read the text

This wonderfully designed site has been nominated for a Irish Blog award and voting is closed so I missed out on that one. Design? What about the all jaysis comics and silly crap I put up every week. Fuck’s sake. I know Frank did a great job on the design but where’s the Best Art Blog nomination? Ah who cares. Eagles all the way.

So if you want to get a glimpse into my incredibly sensitive soul buy Tequila. A copy of Amperduke wouldn’t hurt either.

bonus-03

Yeah come on

vote for me.

It only takes a minute girl.

I’m in the FAVOURITE COMIC ARTIST/WRITER category right beside Alan Moore…that guy. This is only the longlist so the shortlist voting will be next month I presume.

It’s a British awards thing so let’s zing it by voting Irish. My good Fwend and bumchum Dec Shalvey is up for Favourite Newcomer despite winning one last year and my main nigguz Al and Ian who do SANCHO are in The Favourite European comic category.

Vote. Tell your pals to vote. Make new pals and tell them to vote. Make new pals by voting.

Thanks fwends!

They used to call me the Gee Master but now its The Ski Master.

Went Skiing in Austria, not as gay as I thought it would be. I had what only can be described as my first panic attack on the first day though. I was completely freaked out by the size of the mountains and felt trapped. Just the enormity of it all. It reminded me of story I read where the first space tourists make it to the moon but as soon as they get there they all just slit their throats because they’re freaked out. Wave after wave of them landing on the moon and just slitting their fat throats. That was me.

But by day three I was deadly at it so fuck you. Frank wrecked his leg a couple of weeks ago skiing and his Obi-Wan like ghost kept appearing and telling me to slow down so I did.

My inboxes are crammed with mails so bear with me. One that jumped out was Rich Smith’s tribute art to Amperduke!

I fuckin’ love it!!!! LOVE IT! Check out the wrinkly prune tits on that fine Snodule skank.Come on kids, send in your Amperduke art and I’ll post it here. Dec drew his rendition for me at the Tequila Launch which I must dig out. Plus Domen from Slovenia drew me this. Send them in, the sillier and shitter the better!

Insect versus Lizard

Thursday, February 14th, 2008

**UPDATE** I’m away for a week. There are copies of the book available in Crow Corner Comics and in the George Bernard Shaw where the exhibition will be running for a few weeks. Cheers dudes, will get them in the rest of the shops when I’m back.

insect vs lizard

The above is a panel from a new Twised Tales story for 2000AD. Insects vs Lizard. What could be better?

I used to work in a petshop and I kept lizards for years but it’s something I grew out of. Keeping a living creature in a small glass box for amusement or bragging rights is wrong. It’s a theme that crept into Mr AMPERDUKE.

When I was 19 I was planning to start a large scale cricket farm, food for lizards. The sums worked out but finding a location in Dublin because of the smell, the noise and the very real threat to the local ecosystem if they all escaped were the pitfalls. I’ve heard some nutty and disturbing stories about keeping reptiles, one that has stuck with me is this; a chap had some baby leopard geckos in a tank but he fed them crickets that were too big so the food attacked the residents and ate out their eyes. Horrible.

insects on monster

Another mad one from the petshop; we had these nasty Nechradon-like fish called Arowanas, they’re a big status symbol in Asian communities, I’d feed them all the dead fish each day but it was never enough. I came in one day to see a tank was empty. It had been known to happen that they would jump out their tank, (only one could be kept in a tank) and be found dead on the floor as a thin brown desiccated strip. I looked around and could find him. Then I noticed that he was in a different tank about 3 tanks down the row. He jumped across into another one and devoured all the little gay and happy fish. Every one of them.

Man I could write for hours about this shit.

So the launch is tonight then I’m off to Austria for a week. I’ll put up pics etc when I get back. Thanks to everyone who has ordered the book so far.
