Eclectic Micks!
This has been bubbling for a while now with around 12,000 emails a day from the lads. There is now an elite group of Irish comic artists and we’re calling ourselves The Eclectic Micks. Thompson thought of the name I believe and it’s really growing on me. The plan is to release a sketchbook this year. Each artist picks a character for each artist to draw, I got Swamp Thing, Captain America, Dredd, Thor and I forget the other ones.
So here’s the roll call:
PJ Holden
Dec Shalvey
Will Sliney
Stephen Mooney
Nick Roche (Sorry Nick, couldn’t find your folio site!)
Stephen Thompson
Me
It’s just great finally having pals who do the same thing. Not that I ever talk to them or anything, it’s like having a frozen sliced pan in the freezer, just knowing it’s there makes me feel better. Nah, the boys are really making waves. Nick has done Transformers and Doctor Who, Mooney has done CSI, Angel and The Mummy, Thompson is working on Star Trek and has done a bunch books in the US, Will and Dec are working on loads of shit, a graphic novel each for Classical Comics and my main man PJ is knocking out non stop artwork for 2000AD
and Fearless for Image.
It’s mad though, I still don’t know anything about comics, what’s popular and who’s doing what but the lads know everything. EVERYTHING. It’s a new year resolution to read more comics. I read and HATED the new League of Extraordinary Gentlemen book though.
I think we’re keeping all our sketches secret till the book is out so go suck a wang.

Yeah - the new League Book isn’t really a comic so in that respect I hated it.
It is what it is though - it is a “Black Dossier” a piece of artistic “work”. In that respect it’s amazing in terms of how well it achieves what it sets out to do.
Also - the 3D work was incredible, I spent about an hour studying it to see how they got the dept of field to be as precise as it is.

Finally a chance to see your version of Dredd, can’t wait. Any advancement on that wordless Dredd strip idea at all eh?
January 25th, 2008 at 6:15 pm
Yep, Dredd is coming along nicely. Drew my Swamp Thing last night and it was fun.
Black Dossier, you know what? I didn’t even make it to the end but I still don’t want to try. It’s just lame and lazy using all these existing characters.
Felt like I was ripped off by getting so much text.. Like in an annual you’d get a 6 page short story instead of 6 pages of comics.
Should also point out that Will designed that wunnerful logo

Hey Bob.
If you looking for some good comics check out the new book about crazy old cartoonist Fletcher Hanks. http://www.fletcherhanks.com/ABOUT.html
I think he is my new favourite cartoonist which is saying something as I fell out of love with comics a few years ago, he might be the man to make me luv ‘em again.

Your welcome Dec. He actually made me pick up iron man about the only marvel title I’ve never read. Did you read the fan boy email that he was sent [this post http://kahnehteh.blogspot.com/2008/01/x-block90-minutes.html ] bloody funny read.

Saw a collected edition of Battle Royal in Sub a few weeks back, thats next on the list, also gotta finish getting the old boy comics.

Boo fokkin YA! Aw Cliodhna hun, that Eric Canete dude has been bookmarked. Love that style. Any more gems like that send em on. Same for everybody else.
Bren, that Fletcher Hanks dude looks nutty! Will see if Liam has it. I love crappy and unintentional funny comics. You can get some gems though torrents.
Read a few bits of Battle Royale, liked it. My favourite manga was Cyber 7, published by Eclipse in the 90’s. Deadly story about these wierd little robots and a rabbit man who had a monster in is hat and all kinds of wacky action.

Great news. I’ll check out those other lads. The only other Irish bloke I know of is yer man Gerry Hunt. I picked up his streets of Dublin when it came out just for the drawings. I still haven’t read it.

January 30th, 2008 at 8:11 am
I wouldn’t mind getting me hands on some of the original drawings from it.
January 30th, 2008 at 8:14 pm
Well I have some of Gerrys art and its the biz. You should give him a buzz Matt, Bren will sort you out
January 31st, 2008 at 4:59 am
Yeah, Streets of Dublin was mad. Got him to sign it at Subcon, while my hand posed for a sketch he was drawing of a lad getting pushed off an apartment.
Glad to see he’s working on something new too. Hope you’re colourin’, Bren!
