Amperduke cover conundrum
That spelt right? Conundrum? Had the files open yesterday of the cover because I was doing an ad for Your Round. Still haven’t settled on a cover design for Mr. Amperduke so I scooped up 6 possibilities. None of these are by any means finished but it gives a fair idea of what I’m thinking. Which way to put the Lego block facing, how much blood, which colours etc. I fucking hate designing. Really I do. It’s gay. There’s just too many options. Can we not just go back to Fuzzy Felts? I’ve worked as a ‘designer’ now for years and still find it a massive pain in the toast.
So I’m interested in seeing what everyone likes or hates on these. If you have any ideas please let me know or bang me a mail if you have a design/colours I can rip off. Thanks chickeys.
Don’t forget, this Thursday, the 26th, Freak Show launch and signing in The Sugar Club.

Number 3, by a long chalk. Though I might get rid of the lines
April 21st, 2007 at 11:34 am
I def prefer the angle of the brick in no.s 2 and 3. I like the lines in no. 3 bit dont like the colours
April 21st, 2007 at 2:12 pm
Number six its minimal and you focus on the brick while the blood is more noticeable to.
April 21st, 2007 at 3:48 pm
Number 4 - the rest undermine the kick ass seriousness of the work. Its art baby!!! And the Bob Byrne logo on it is deadly as well.
April 21st, 2007 at 4:01 pm
4 with blood.
April 21st, 2007 at 6:47 pm
If you implemented the colours in 3 into the layout of 6, it would look amazing.
April 22nd, 2007 at 12:57 am
1 for me Bob, its the has the most recognisable lego block image and the blood is nice and subtle, you look at it and 3 seconds later your smile. I do realise that i’m the only one who says 1 but you listen to me… or I wont buy it.
April 22nd, 2007 at 11:51 am
To be honest, I don’t like the brick. You need something stronger.
April 22nd, 2007 at 11:52 am
The brick is nice and arty studenty warholy but…
April 22nd, 2007 at 4:29 pm
Nice one boyz! 3 looks gay to me, so maybe that’s out Bif. All great ideas lads, like yours Tropy. I’m leaning towards 4 with loads of blood, like 6 best at the moment though. Keep them comments comin niggas and I’ll do a second round next week. Much appreicated.
Nah, Con the brick IS the cover. Thought of that image from day one.
April 22nd, 2007 at 7:09 pm
I think 6 is a winner. If I was to change it I would remove the little details at the bottom and take the main background colour all the way to the bottom edge, leaving your name as it is in white. But hey, you’re the artist.
April 22nd, 2007 at 7:24 pm
I like 6 the most. 5 ain’t bad either.
April 22nd, 2007 at 11:42 pm
Sage advice Chris, Will do tomorrow. Nice one Sac Doctor, I’m feeling 5 and 6 too man
April 23rd, 2007 at 8:33 am
still not mad on this design, dont think it reflects the epicness/style of the story. The whole simplistic vector based design implies that the whole insides will be like loco roco. But what the fook would I know?
Bumped into Georgio yesterday, give him a shout!

April 23rd, 2007 at 9:25 am
4 and 6 for the simplicity, and mostly 6 where I also like the darker bottom. The twelve icons is a bit overwhelming though.
You could go mad doing this.
April 23rd, 2007 at 9:37 am
Nice one Eolai, I think the little circles break it up a bit, might scale them back. Papa Peanut, suck my loco roco. I’ve done up a ‘painted’ version in Painter. Once I’ve settled on the final design I’ll dick around with making it less vectory. Thanks Beeee-atch.

Number 4’s ya man! At first i liked 3 but then as i scrolled down, 6 caught my eye and made 3 look a bit over the top and then i saw 4 and thought that was the most fitting. It’s simple, the colours are’nt too bright, there’s a godd contrast in colours on the brick, it’s minus the shiny puddle of blood- giving it a more high-brow edge(!?) and i WELL like all them little flourishes around ya name at the bottom. GOOD.
April 23rd, 2007 at 12:15 pm
4, with more blood (as in 5 or 6, or maybe solid colour? The shiny red stuff looks a bit, um, fake). I like the little circles under the title, too. It looks all sad and alone without them.
April 23rd, 2007 at 3:07 pm
Yeah the blocks on the top 3 are only placeholders. The blood on 4 disappeared for some reason. Check back next week Kav
April 23rd, 2007 at 3:18 pm
“3 looks gay to me, so maybe that’s out Bif”
Yeah, i changed my mind anyway. 6 with stronger colours would be better.
April 23rd, 2007 at 3:38 pm
With Bif. Deffo 6 with with 4’s colours. I like the logo, Mr A’s ears on the serif yeah?
April 23rd, 2007 at 7:50 pm
I think 5’s the way to go. 6 looks a little too bare. I like the colours in 3, but the red might distract from the blood. You also want to keep the lego brick yellow, or else yer in danger of makin it look like a normal brick.
So my vote’s for 5; Maybe use the background colour from 6? The green and yellow are a bit too similar. I’d also add a solitary little head along the bottom banner to balance it with the top, also, just for shits and giggles, cuz that’s how i roll.
April 23rd, 2007 at 9:08 pm
Yeah the brick sort of has to be yellow. Good advice Dec. For once. ‘Cut the green wire Bob’ what the cocking hell where you finking you little nincomfuck?
April 24th, 2007 at 12:00 am
4 lads - fuckin 4!!! Everything else is washy (5 and 6) or looks like a daz ad (3)! 4 is both eyecatching and bleak at the same time and most importantly i can see it all dog earred and crumpled sitting in chapters. 4 for president!

April 24th, 2007 at 10:37 am
New Virginia Tech football jerseys,oh yeh!
April 24th, 2007 at 10:56 am
I reckon either 3 or 6, tho if it’s 3 you might want to change the colour scheme somewhat. Definitely go with a bright-colour brick to emphasize the lego-ness, and plenty of blood to hammer home the unsettling feeling of the whole thing. I don’t think the circles actually work for this kind of cover though.
April 24th, 2007 at 11:16 am
ah fucknuts,it didnt link right,
here we go

Jesus christ man that’s rough! Gold though.
Yeah Kyle, I’ll try a sunburst background like in 3 on a different scheme. Just
realised i can set up a drap and drop thing in flash for everyone to fiddle with it
April 24th, 2007 at 1:29 pm

I show you this? http://img256.imageshack.us/my.php?image=hotdogslh3.jpg
myspace banned it,some heads more than likely making shirts of them.
April 24th, 2007 at 2:03 pm
Despite your rejection of it, I’m with Bif on this one. 3 is hands down the best design, but I’d change the brick to the orange colour in no.1.
Papa P makes a good point too about setting expectations though…
April 24th, 2007 at 2:07 pm
Just to expand on my thoughts and confuse the issue even more…
Design 3. Using the Brick from Design 2, but the brick colour from Design 1.
The dynamic lines are attention grabbing, the orange colour is exciting, and the composition of brick2 is most satisfying.
April 24th, 2007 at 3:54 pm
Poncho you’re a gem. Really proud of you bwo.
Shit Frank I was hoping you didnt see this because whatever you tell me is the gospel. So maybe 3 is back in. Yes folks I’m that fickle. FrankP is my hero.
April 25th, 2007 at 6:33 pm
Roll a dice. But yeah - more blood.
April 25th, 2007 at 6:56 pm
Yeah blood all the way.
Sorry Hurk, your comment was in the spam thing. Yep, the general consensus is for a mix of the bottom 3. Will dick around with it over the weekend.
April 26th, 2007 at 8:18 pm
4 big no, imaging it on the shelf againist other books and i dont see that jumping out at me. Colours on 3 are a bit…..eh……but graphicaly most interesting cept for the brick which looks like a half assed cut out….the angle on 2 works better……..im not 100% gone on the font its looks a little like willy wonkas chocolate factory to me. the blood reads the best on 5 and 6
April 26th, 2007 at 8:19 pm
man my spelling is rubbish………dang it
April 26th, 2007 at 9:38 pm
Number 3 is grand. Just go with number 3. no-will give a shite anyway. I’ll buy it . I was sucked into the clamnugget yonks ago.
see ye on the flipside fucko.

[...] Bob, over at Clamnuts, has been working on the cover for his silent masterpiece Mr Amperduke. He posted some mock up covers to solicit feedback, and of course I couldn’t resist throwing my oar in. [...]
April 26th, 2007 at 9:53 pm
A lot of what Cliodhna says is in keeping with my earlier comments, so she obviously knows what she’s talking about
If you really have to go with something from the bottom three Bob I’d go with six, but make it even more confident in itself. I posted about it on BifSniff, couldn’t resist tinkering.
April 26th, 2007 at 10:41 pm
Fix the shading on the brick in 3 and your done. The rest will look like crap on paper without the screen backlight..
April 26th, 2007 at 10:52 pm
3 without the stripey bits and with more blood. I had decided it was 3 before leaving a comment. Then I saw that 3 was gay so I didn’t know what to think. Then I saw that FrankP liked 3 and that you thought FrankP was God so I thought the same way as God and 3 was good again. It has to be 3 now for fucks sake.
April 27th, 2007 at 10:36 am
SPLONCH. That’s the sound of my bwain exploding. Thank you one and all. Frank’s version of 6 is looking good to me. Now…..THE BACK COVER?. Wank.
May 21st, 2007 at 5:36 pm
#6 hands down for me. The colours work the best for drawing attention to the blood, and the simplicity conveys the narrative of the image the best.
September 6th, 2007 at 1:05 pm
