The Beano again

Yes my peeps it’s that time of year again where I start resenting that I’m not drawing comics full time and submit stuff to The Beano. This is my infamous Dennis the Menace which has been submitted twice now, once in the hand drawn verison and then again in it’s from below where I fixed it up digitally and emulated the gammy way they letter and the nice washy colours they use.
It was of course rejected and I can now see that although it looks okay, it really is a bit crap/stiff.

Neh, I think I should really just stop trying to draw and concentrate on the writing of comics. It’s so easy and 80% of what’s out there is gayer than your gay uncle sending you a facebook invite.

beano flat

Hey I’m pissing into the wind on this one, The Beano is hanging on by a thread and The Dandy has turned into something like LOOK IN! . Ah at least 2000AD loves me. My goal in life now though is to draw Spy Vs Spy for MAD magazine.

Man fuck the beano you’re the next Alan Moore!! In some future tense where you dress like a victorian gentleman and are filming the dvd extras for amperduke IV that beano shit’ll reek like britneys sex tape.

  2. Bob Byrne Says:

Nah I still have a boner for being in The Beano and drawing the Numskulls.
Yeah the next Alan Moore only I’ll suck the corporate cock at the first chance. Neh, I loved the Killing Joke and LXG but I don’t think he’s the be all and end all.

I still think that Beano stuff of yours is great man. It’s interesting to see what you can do when you reign yourself in and resist the urge to draw Dennis knock one out on a passing girl, and do a something a little more wholesome.

Nice point with the writing tho. It’s easier to find a good artist. Good writers are in few supply. At least you’ve enought talent to draw your own stories, therefore showcasing the stories in a better light.

Fuck yer uncle and Facebollocks, what’s gay is the Beano’s font. Ah well, still great strip. There’s something about the way Den’s jumping over the fence that amuses me…
And when didya do the Numskulls? I think you should cook up a Calamity James strip sometime.

  8. lorcs Says:

Yeah Calamity James was always one of my favorite strips in the Beano it was liek a precusor to the crazy Oink stuff, I always presumed it was Baxendale that did Calamity James, but it was Tom Paterson http://lambiek.net/artists/p/paterson_tom.htm

would love to see your take on the numskulls, to see which numskull is in charge of flarn and tugging

dec, heartening to know writers are in short supply, as my drawings are pretty rudmentary and mostly rude http://jhomunculusarts.blogspot.com/
thinking of putting some pitches together for that writers workshop at the birmingham thing.

hehe thought youd like the randomness of this

  10. Bren Says:

the policeman looks american, draw a british “plod” and resubmit, go on!

  11. Bob Byrne Says:

Nah, havent had anything in The Beano. The lad that draws The Numskulls now is absolutely flawless though. I just love the concept, same with Calamity James, you just can’t top it or even attempt to cover it. I’d be good with some of the old characters like Brassneck.

Yeah the Gorillas in comics spate is analogous to the spate of crappy vampire/zombie characters today.

Nah Bren, that copper is a character called Slipper and I just copied him.

  12. Paul Says:

Wats up wit de Gorillas. Very Random indeed Luke

  13. luke Says:

    is that paul downey?
    learn to spell paul

  14. Bren Says:

oh, Slipper looks american, excuse my ignorance hav’nt read the Beano in long time

  15. Bob Byrne Says:

Yeah it’s shit about the Yankification, but hey, Dennis has changed from a retarderd sadistic bully to a loveable 5 year old scamp.

  16. paul d Says:

Oh well sorry luke. Jesus Christ. No need to take a fit

  17. Matt Vinyl Says:

Can you do those foldy-in drawings that were at the back of the comic (MAD). I liked them so I did.
