A Love story

'kay I'm standing at a bus stop in town yesterday and this good looking girl comes up with a large wrapped canvas under her arm. I'm looking at her with the same sense of envy and pity I get whenever I see artists. Especially around Thomas Street where I was, the National College of Art and Design is there and looking at all the 'wacky' individuals and introverts scurrying in the entrance always makes me smile. My thoughts on what a waste Art College is best left for another day but alot of the pupils at NCAD, past and present are poor
misguided fools who will put in 4 0r 5 years
and leave with a meaningless qualification.
I personally know around five people who have done the NCAD thing and were so wrapped up in the whole experience that they got nothing done, learned nothing, have nothing to show for it, and spend years afterwards surrounding themselves with similar people in a terrible self congratulatory bubble, standing at bus stops looking winsome with a canvas under their arm is probably as good as it gets, 'I'm an artist'.
Anyway she was standing there when this large dude turns the corner holding a massive white canvas, it looks like a window in the drawing but it was a canvas. He proudly marches with the heavy frame, a struggling artist in every sense, walking against the rush hour traffic with disdain for us poor wageslaves. The bus stop is full of poor tired bastard commuters like me and
he no doubt sees us as that. Then he sees her.
The mini opera of his face as he walked closer was one of the best thing I've seen all year, the recognition of this beautiful fellow artist against the crushing reality of 9-5, his pride in the size of his canvas; that she would bow down to his superior art board, I could see that he fell in love instantly and by right of nature they should walk off together, it looked like he was going to nod or attempt to talk, he gets closer and closer but no he keeps walking, past me, with his head hung in shame. All done in four seconds.
It was great but nobody else saw it. When I write this as a comic I'll add this as the resolution; he goes home and paints a big picture of her on the canvas and then she ends up going to the exhibition and sees hereslf and then they fall in love. But that's not what happened and he's probably at home now tearing the balls off himself thinking about what could have been. What a gem.--------------------------------------------------------

A sweet story. You should write songs for that Lilly Allen geebag
Bob sez: That has completely thrown me. Does she secretly wish she went to NCAD too so she could get all the gooter?
You probably already know this, but I just wanted to see it onscreen...
NCAD: Acronym for: No-one Can Actually Draw
"NCAD: Acronym for: No-one Can Actually Draw"
Surely an art college is the best place for them, then?
John
I think all great stories should end with the hero "tearing the balls off himself thinking about what could have been"
Truer word have never been said.

Yeah, I love those kind of moments.
Isn't it funny how better our lives would be if we had the courage to talk to strangers? It seems so simple, yet it holds us all back...
I blame my mother: IF YOU TALK TO STRANGERS YOU'LL GET RAPED!!!
:p
Bob sez: Thanks lads.Talking to strangers is a wierd one, you're actually expected to do it in places like Donegal but in Dublin it's only permitted on Friday and Saturday around 11pm to 3am and you still run the risk of bumraping.
Heh, that NCAD acronym is great. Yes John, they should be taught but you can teach somebody draw in 6 months not stringing it out for 4-5 years. It gives art the bad rap it deserves.
Re: talking to strangers...we're getting worse at it in the west with the increased popularity of portable entertainment systems that separate you from the world. Which is a shame, as this apparently negatively impacts how we perceive interactions with strangers (ie we're more likely to get pissed off at being approached someone unknown but harmless or a bit odd where we might previously have shrugged it off).
Mind you, when I was in Dublin for the 24 hour comics thing a good hour at least was spent exclusively on warning me about the danger of bumrape and recounting tales of previous bumrape victims....
Re: Learning to draw in NCAD. Whatever happened to the days where you had to show you could draw, with a portfolio to get into Art College. Whats the requirement now? Some wild tale of wanting to build a windmill out of just binliners and spit?

Bob sez: You're exactly right there man, I know there ARE good courses there now but I think everyones pressured into being awtists first and artist second. More on this soon
