Little plastic fetus
Years and years ago, possibly 1999 I was at a party and standing in a kitchen in Rathfarnham while this lad was telling me about how a girl he was sharing a house with had an abortion. I didn't really beleive it at the time but he said she was given a little plastic fetus by the 'counselling service' to try guilt her. I asked someone else and they too had seen a little plastic fetus.
I decided I must have one to add to by bogey toy collection and while I thought it was funny ( I kept thinking of the little Made in China on it) I knew it was a sick thing to give a confused, vulnerable girl. The ever and increasingly brilliant sex.ie covers it and also has a two part audio documentary about abortion in Ireland, second part is a bit weak but still essential listening. This country is fucked!This isn't the place to debate abortion but just as a reminder of how although we like to think of ourselves as a modern and enlightened we are still living in a Catholic state.

Not the place to debate it but where is. Everyone gets proud of the way we outted the priests and nuns systematic abuse of unmarried mothers in the magdelene laundries etc but a percentage of potential teenage mothers are now herded across the water by tight lipped parents instead. The same problem being tackeld in a different but equally fucked up and unsupportive way. Everybody knows somebody who knows somebody whos had an abortion and we want saddam to be spared.
Another fucked up abortion issue is the cult like religious groups who pose as option giving clinics and browbeat the potential mothers into keeping the babys by saying they'll be haunted by the babies and burn in hell! The women tend not to say anything because the issue is so taboo.
